Baby girl was fighting sleep...or sleep was fighting her (she seems to be like her momma in the sense that falling asleep doesn't come easy) and she was fussing and whining and climbing over top of me and flipping and flipping and I was exhausted and kept dozing off for a minute here and there only to wake up to her unsettled and crying and I was getting frustrated. This has become a pattern over the last week or two and I'm not fond of it. After about an hour of it I'd had enough...I snapped, I didn't really yell but I spoke at her in my not so nice mom voice that I always regret after all is said and done. She burried her head in my arms and tried to compose herself then said, "sorry mom, sorry for crying." I told her it was okay, that sometimes we all get upset and cry but asked her why she was crying? What was it that she really wanted? After a few answers, like " I want my boo boo owl" and "I want to play" the real truth came out..."I want my daddy home."
Tears welled up in my eyes as I rocked her and hugged her and told her he'd be home soon. Because to her, only now would be soon enough...and we were only on day three of ten...which is like an eternity for a two year old mind and heart. But the tears in my eyes and aching in my heart weren't just for the seven more days she had to go without daddy being home. They were also for the thirty we have yet to face after that and then the approximately two hundred and seventy-five days he'll be away after that. Efff! The reality of it all is going to be heart-wrenching!
After doing a twelve month deployment, nine months didn't seem so bad...until I thought about the little heart that would ache and the little mind that wouldn't quite understand. I know not every night will be hard, but it won't necessarily be easy either. We will get through it. And I, of course, will do anything known to man to help that little girl pass the days with the least amount of heart ache possible And I will, for the most part of those gazillion days, wear a sincere smile on my face and be positive about it all because it's just life as we know it ...and being negative won't change it. Reality is, it sucks! But might as well get to focusing on making the best of it! And reading up on the best ways to deal with a two year olds's aching heart.
Yeah, that slap hurt!
My face is still hurting....
